Say we as humans, either consciously or instinctively - or maybe by this future possible reality we have another level of consciousness that can manipulate things that were previously done by our living species' subconsciousness.
Ok so we have this possibility. What if what we as scientists now call homosexuality a slight genetic mutation. What if homosexuality is the realization of the xmen is what I am trying to say. Maybe the species evolves within technology and begins to use machinery to engineer these new specimen. The genders break down to something the same and then it is up to the computers to decide what kind of genes shall be used in further and subsequent orders of their new species.
